Isn’t it possible to be too young to have a baby?

If you are pregnant, it means that your body’s reproductive system has matured enough to have a baby.  So in that way, you’re not too young.  Like every pregnant woman, you need to be under a doctor’s care.  A good OB doctor knows the physical concerns of younger women who are pregnant.

Your doctor needs to make sure that the size of the baby’s head is not too big for the size of the pelvic bones your baby needs to pass through at the time of birth.

Your doctor will also need to make sure that you are eating enough of the right foods and sleeping enough so both you and your baby can safely grow.

Blood tests will inform your doctor of the following:

  • Whether you have enough red blood cells
  • Whether the chemicals which regulate your blood pressure are within normal limits
  • Whether your blood sugar remains at normal levels

This list is not exhaustive, but tells a doctor’s main concerns.

Because of these concerns, as well as any unique needs you may present during your pregnancy, please made an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.  Keeping your doctor appointments and following all the instructions you’re given are the best ways to promote a healthy pregnancy and best possible delivery.

Remember, even if you have one or more of the medical concerns mentioned above, that does not imply that you can’t have a baby.  It simply means that you need to be under a doctor’s care, as all pregnant women should.  Your doctor will monitor your pregnancy and treat you if any needs arise.

If you don’t have a doctor, or don’t like the advice that the one you’ve seen has given you, and you’d like help in making an appointment with a different doctor, please call your local Pregnancy Help Center for a referral.  (You can find them listed under “Abortion Alternatives” in the Yellow Pages.)
